3 FOs to end 2007

First FO is the reinvented Snicket sock into a pair of Ravenishes.

ravenish4.JPG

ravenish5.JPG

This is made with the summer installment of STR. I hated the original pattern that came with the yarn, so I first tried using the Snicket pattern. Unfortunately, the sock was too tight, so I used the cuff pattern of the next STR sock club pattern Lenore and repeated it to make Ravenish. I ribbed the bottom of the foot so that they would fit a bit snugger.

This brings my 2007 sock total to 10 pairs! That blasted my goal of beating 2006's total of 5. And of course I still have 4 lone socks that are without mates. Can I beat 10 in 2008?

Second FO to end 2007 is the Naughty/Nice Scarf!

I love how this turned out. It still needs to be blocked to soften it up and keep it from curling, but the girls are there! You look at the scarf straight-on it just looks stripped, but then you look down and Wow!

And last FO of 2007, this was finished just yesterday at about 4:30pm.

Soy-trelac scaft! Using a modified version of the entrelac scarf from Scarf Style and Patons Soy-Wool yarn, this scarf was started many months ago, but when I found it earlier this week, it took me only about four days to finish. If I had been monogamous with it, this scarf is probably a one week project.

So out with the old and in with the new...

Olbermann + Rhinebeck = True Love!

p1_olbermann.jpg

Did you watch Keith Olbermann tonight? Did you hear his SHEEP and WOOL reference?! (Granted, not in the best context, but...)

"Roger Ailes’ Fox Business Channel is doing horribly in the ratings averaging 6,300 viewers during the day and 15,000 in primetime. That's about how many people as attended the Sheep and Wool Festival at Rhinebeck New York last October."

I love 3s

Knitting socks on size 3 needles is such a dream. The socks zoom and fly off the needle. Here's the first pair of 2008.

This is Regia 6 fadig in Crazy Colors. As you can see, I turned the socks inside out because I liked the reverse stockinette. It seems to tame the craziness of the stripes a bit. I actually have 2 more skeins of this, and so can make another pair of socks. But I needed to change it up, so I started another pair...

Lovely, pretty Colinette Jitterbug in Mardia Gras. I started these last night, and as you can see, they are also flying, but this time on size 2s (1s? I don't know... stupid Knit Picks and their lack of marking). I love this yarn to no end, but there were 2 knots in it!!!! For the price of this yarn, I would expect zero knots. Oh well... back to knitting.

All the Little Sockies

sockies.JPG

I finally got around to washing a bunch of handknits yesterday. As you can see, it was mostly a load of socks. They seem to survive a trip in the front-loader on cold with some Woolite without much problem. The few that have shrunk/felted a bit suffered that in previous laundrymat experiences. Of these 16 pairs, 1 is Kevin's and 3 were knit for me by someone else. I just recently updated my sock gallery and I'm up to a lifetime of 30 knitted pairs of socks with 31 and 32 on the needles and potential 33 and 34 waiting for mates and likely 35 to be ripped.

It seems that sock knitting is the only knitting motivation that I have right now. But certainly not the only motivator in my life...

bike.JPG
Meet the Bell Motivator! After months and months of my bike sitting in our computer/craft/spare room collecting dust and taking up space, I wondered if there was a way to make an outdoor bike into an indoor bike. I should have thought of this sooner! After a little research on trainers (that's what the bike stand thingy is called because it has a resistance component so that you can "train" for your biking adventures indoors during bad weather). It isn't perfect, but my bike is now basically a stationary bike that both Kevin and I can use. It will probably remain an indoor bike because I am too terrified to ride it outside where we live (people drive like maniacs... they don't respect other cars, I doubt they'd respect someone on a bike).

So I've got motivation for knitting socks, motivation for riding my bike... if only I could locate that motivation for doing work since school starts again on Tuesday. Bleh! Back to browsing Ravelry with the hope that my first day lectures will magically write themselves and appear on my computer.

All about the Socks

Have you noticed it has been all socks all the time here?

On Ravelry, a member posted the question "Why don't I see all the handmade stuff?" For those of you who aren't on there or don't feel like clicking the link, she went on to say:

I live in the metro Washington DC area and we have no shortage of amazing yarn stores within a reasonable drive. At any given store I see knitters buying huge amounts of yarn – I’ve seen women buy $300 of stuff without blinking – but I hardly ever see finished projects. I look around on the street or in stores and spot mostly hats and scarves. Where are all these sweaters? I wear what I make. Doesn’t anybody else?

People have given answers as varied as "I always wear my socks, but you can't see them," "in the winter my sweater is under a jacket," and "sometimes handknit sweaters look store bought."

I thought about replying to the forum thread, but then decided to share my thoughts over here instead. The asker was specifically curious about the sweaters, and I agree $300 worth of yarn would be a hell of a lot of socks (ok, maybe not as many as you'd think... if you average $20 for a skein that would make a pair, that's only 15 pairs of socks). I'm more interested in this question of "where's the sweaters" for the more personal reason that I have not been wearing my handknit sweaters. **hangs head in shame**

Maybe this is just me*, so wouldn't hold up for other knitters (and partially why I didn't post into the thread my thoughts), but sometimes I knit a sweater and it isn't too great. Other people say it is nice and pretty and awesome. But I don't necessarily like the fit, or the color, or the arm length, or something. And then they sit lonely in my sweater box. Well, not lonely because there are a lot (handknit and storebought) sweaters in that box (it is really more of a chest or a trunk). So where are the sweaters? Maybe they are knit and instead of gifted or hiding under a jacket they are hanging out in a drawer.

And I bring this up also because it probably explains the proliferation of sock knitting for me over the past several months. I don't want to spend the time knitting another sweater that is going to end up in the sweater box to be worn once or twice and then forgotten and ignored. I've got the sock knitting down to perfection. I've even gotten to the point where I can eyeball and know that the foot is long enough to start the toe (or heel depending on the direction).

So my answer to "Where are all these sweaters?" is that they might be hiding in a drawer, not perfect enough to wear proudly, but not flawed enough to frog.

*There is also the even more personal level that my skin has decided to rebel against me and no amount of lotions, creams, or medications will stop it from itching and being dried out, and so wool doesn't feel so nice even when it is super soft.

One Trick Pony

Here are the lovely finished Colinette Jitterbug Socks.

colinette5.JPG

I love them very much. I love the colors, the fit, and the feel. However, I won't probably ever buy Colinette again. Yes, I am very bitter about the 2 knots that tied in 2 different dye lots to the original dye lot. Here's a better look...

colinette6.JPG

I asked Kevin when I was wearing them if he knew which was the bad sock, and he could easily point out the one with less yellows. The amount of yellow was a big part of why I picked the particular skein that I did. Oh well...

colinette7.JPG

They are still very pretty!

What's on the needles next? I think... maybe... possibly... a sweater! Let that settle in! I'll leave you with one more sock picture to recover from the shock.

Back to Work

Classes started today. I still have one more to teach (at 6:30). In the first two classes, I simply went over the syllabus and let them leave early. But this class coming up is a once a weeker, so there isn't a lot of time. I've been battling a headache most of the day that came on after my vision went all weird and blurry. I've never had that happen before. I think my just allergic to work and my office.

In trying to kill time between classes, I made myself a schedule. The schedule will go into effect on Monday:

  • Monday: Work on lectures and PowerPoints for class that meets Tuesday/Thursday

  • Tuesday: Work on lectures and PPs for class that meets Tuesday/Thursday/Friday (such that lectures are set for Thursday/Friday/Tuesday)

  • Wednesday: Work on lectures and PPs for class that meets Tuesday nights

  • Thursday: Work on Research (this is a much needed day!!!)

  • Friday: Catch up on whatever wasn't finished OR Get ahead (if possible)

This schedule seems completely doable for me (excepting this week which will be tough and crazy because I was a bigger slacker over the break). We'll see how long the schedule lasts. I'm putting it out to the world here so that I can (and you can) hold me accountable.

In knitting news, I started THIS with the Noro Silk Garden I "recycled" from my Klaralund. I'm about 50% through the left front. And hey, I told the blog before I told Ravelry!! Pics maybe tomorrow.

Spring Knits

I'm probably a bit late on this, but have you seen the preview for the Spring Interweave?

There are a lot of really cute little cardigans. And I love the socks!
