Subtitle: Why I don't spend time outside.
So since I was working from home today and that entails a lot of reading (still have more lectures to write, so need to get ahead on the chapters) and grading papers, I thought that I'd enjoy the warm, sunny weather by reading outside.
I'm sitting there reading and watching the urban outdoor life (basically cars and trucks driving by, the occasional person walking by). Then I glimpse movement low and near the fence that surrounds our yard. At first I thought that it was a stray cat that was dirty and disgusting. Then the animal turns the corner and enters the yard and it was no cat.

(This is not my picture; I found it on the internet, but it looks very much like the one I saw. I wish I had taken my camera outside with me!)
Yeah, so it was a possum. It appeared to be injured because it was limping oddly on its back leg. It disappeared around the side of the house, I presume to the garbage cans and possibly the untended area behind the garage.
It was a very odd sight for lunchtime, broad daylight. I think though that I'll be sending Kevin to the garbage cans from now on. I don't want to meet that thing again!

OMG! I would've totally freaked. I checked them out on the web. Hopefully it's already moved on. The don't usually hang around the same area. I still agree with you though. Send Kevin to the garbage cans. LOL

Apparently they are usually very docile! I don't think you have anything to fear.

Umm... they may be docile but they can be aggressive too (yes, that doesn't make sense but trust me, I had one living under my shed). Be careful around injured possums. They're very territorial and any injured animal is dangerous - just defensive instinct, which is very understandable given the situation. Careful!
