Adventures in Cat-sitting

Do you remember that movie Adventures in Babysitting? I totally wanted to be that babysitter... so cool, so pretty, so exciting. But I digress...

This week and next week I am officially a cat-sitter. Aside from some extraordinary feistiness on Monday, which involved much scratching and biting, the cat has been lovely and happy to see me. And since I don't have my own cat (and very much wish I could... stupid landlord), I've enjoyed playing with him and tending to his needs.

Today I decided to have some adventures tied into the cat-sitting. Since I have been commuting to the cat (bus and subway, including a subway change), I decided to take advantage of the proximity to the subway of a yarn shop that I've wanted to visit. (See this story is knitting related!) I haven't purchased yarn since the Kauni, so I figured a deserved a little, especially since I fell in love with Norah Gaughan's Loppem (non-rav link). My plan was to browse the store's stock, see if they had Berroco's Norah Gaughan Book 3, buy the book, see if there was a suitable and affordable yarn, if yarn could not be found, then I'd leave the store with the book and maybe a skein of sock yarn.

Let me say that it took a lot of self-control to not leave with one of every sock yarn, which would have totally blown my next 3 paychecks, Knitty City has a fantastic selection of sock yarn and a good selection of other yarn as well. I was very impressed and happy with the number and variety of knitting and crocheting books. I don't think I've seen a store with so many books. The staff was very friendly and several asked if I needed any help, but were very hands off when I said that I was just looking. I like knowing that the staff is willing to help, but that they are also willing to let you just roam around and around and around touching and petting.

Since they did have the book and Cascade 220 (color 8509), I succeeded in my goal of getting the book, yarn for Loppem, and not spending more than $50! I still wanted to bring home an armload of sock yarn, but was able to resist. Next time I need some sock yarn, I'll definitely be heading back there.

Then showing additional self-control and lack of self-control, when I got to the neighbor of the cat, I went into the best named chicken place around, "Wonder Chicken," and ordered some french fries, but avoided ordering the delicious fried chicken. The cat and I had some lunch together, played attack the feathers on a rod, watched TV, snoozed, played don't attack Kim's Brock Croc Sock, played ok here's a small piece of yarn to play with, more snoozing and TV watching.

On the way home, I decided to take the longer walk back to the subway station and got an extra 20 minutes of exercise (hopefully taking away a bit of the french fry damage). I was fortunate to catch a train that was running so far behind that it switched to express, even though there are technical no express trains on this line. That did mean I couldn't get off at my usual stop, but I got off at the other one and took a different bus because I realized that I could get off that bus at the diner and get myself some breakfast for dinner (Kevin had an afterwork function and I was otherwise going to go home and eat junk for dinner).

After a lovely dinner, I walked home and stopped at the bodega to get some drinks. I ended up with Captain Morgan's Mojito drinks. They aren't very good, but they are drinkable.

Now I've been relaxing with Captain Morgan, watching the backlog of General Hospital that I have DVRed (which a much hotter Morgan... Jason Morgan), winding Cascade, knitting a gauge swatch, and starting Loppem.

I haven't been this excited about a sweater in a long time. I'm hoping that this turns out nice because I can see wearing it constantly. Pictures of progress tomorrow if my camera batteries haven't died!

Non-stop knitting = FO

Last time I checked in, I had just started Loppem. And now, I'm finished.

Loppem1.JPG

Ten days for a sweater is a pretty good pace (even if said sweater is knit in one piece and doesn't really have sleeves). Once it finishes blocking, I'll get some pictures of it on, but it looks really cute.

I made quite a few changes as I was knitting this. Most notably, I added an extra cable repeat before starting the sleeves, which makes the length from armpit to bottom about 12" instead of 9". I also changed the positioning of the decreases around the yoke, although I didn't change the first set, so the decreases aren't perfectly aligned, but that's ok. I also dropped the position of the top button to the third yoke decrease instead of fourth. Finally, instead of picking up and adding stitches to the sleeves, which looked silly, I just slip-stitch crocheted every other sleeve stitch to close the gapping and puffiness.

I really love this sweater and will likely wear it a lot.

Ok, now I should really get started on that knitting I vowed to finish as part of the knitting Olympics!

Loppem before the Rain

In some incredible luck of timing, we did this photo shoot and walked inside just before it started pouring rain. There was no indication of rain to come, and the sun is shining while the rain comes down. I'll have to go out and look for rainbows when it lets up.

Without further ado...

(Ignore the weird look on my face in this last one. I had just smashed a mosquito on my arm and was trying to not wipe the blood on my pretty sweater.)

Balanced

Thank you for all the great comments on Loppem! I am so happy about the sweater and how it turned it. It has completely restored my confidence that I can knit something other than socks and have it fit well. I've got my next sweater picked out, though I have to wait a few weeks before ordering the yarn. (Have to finish that Ravelympics knitting first!)

I was very excited about this today and had to share:

I also enjoy seeing yellow between my line and the overweight line:

It took me three months to carve out that space! Isn't my Mii cute?

Movie Time!

Well, apparently they are shooting part of a movie on campus today. We were warned that parking would be difficult because of said movie. There was no mention of what movie or who was in it. I can look out my office window and see a bunch of people sitting around and a cart that has some food on it (most notably bananas and apples). I keep hearing a guy yelling "ok rolling" and "cut" and "let's do it again." But I don't see cameras or lights or actors. I think I did make eye contact with the sound guy (or at least the guy sitting in front of a big sound board thingie) from my office window. He didn't look very pleased.

Battleground God

Hmmm... ok, so that's a weird title for a knitting blog post, especially since I've tried to maintain a bit of political, religious, and other controversial topic neutrality here (although most of you could probably guess most of my positions on such topics). However, this is a little thing that I came across in researching activities for my class and I thought it was kind of cool.

I was looking for activities related to attitudes and attitude consistency. Battleground God is 17 true/false questions that test the consistency of your beliefs in god. It doesn't care which god or if you do/don't believe, it is concerned with the consistency of your attitude. Try it out!

What were my results? Well, not to brag, but...

You have been awarded the TPM medal of honour! This is our highest award for outstanding service on the intellectual battleground.

The fact that you progressed through this activity neither being hit nor biting a bullet suggests that your beliefs about God are internally consistent and very well thought out.

A direct hit would have occurred had you answered in a way that implied a logical contradiction. You would have bitten bullets had you responded in ways that required that you held views that most people would have found strange, incredible or unpalatable. However, you avoided both these fates - and in doing so qualify for our highest award. A fine achievement!

Again, I just want to stress that this is only about consistency, not about whether god exists or doesn't or is good or bad (and besides it is just a silly internet game!). I don't want any hate emails! Consistency of attitudes and beliefs is a big topic of study in my field, and I found this through a website offering potential teaching resources for various topics.

Off to play some of their other games to waste time instead of actually writing the lecture I was looking for activities for!

15 Weeks of Summer Exercise

My 15 weeks of summer exercise ends today. I started after school ended in May and I'm ending as school is about to start again on Monday. Now I'm not quitting exercising, I'm moving into my Fall semester exercise plan, which is essentially the same as the summer plan, but I find that putting it into manageable blocks is helpful motivationally. Here are my stats:

  • Maximum estimated weight loss: 10 lbs (estimated because taking highest Wii recorded weight and lowest Wii recorded weight)
  • Average minutes exercising per week (5 days): 290 min.
  • Average Wii minutes per weekday: 46 min.
  • Number is belt holes gained since start: 1
  • Favorite Wii activities: Advanced Step and Expert Boxing
  • Favorite Yoga poses: Warrior and Sun Salutation
  • Average number of glasses of water drank per day: 3 (this is 3 more than before starting exercising)
  • Average number of glasses of soda drank per day: 1 (compared to 2-3 before)

I've started wearing hand and ankle weights while doing Wii Fit and my workout DVDs. They really help to increase the intensity of the workouts. I currently have 1lb weights, but am thinking about getting heavier ones in another couples of weeks.

Hopefully since I've established a good pattern of working out and using the Wii Fit, I'll be able to maintain it during the semester when things get hectic and crazy.

Ack! School!

So school has started up again. I have two FOs to show you (including the lovely curtain that is hanging in my office as we speak... why didn't anyone remind me that stockinette curls?!?!), but I don't have pictures or the ability to upload them right now. Maybe tomorrow?
