Woefully Behind Schedule

I have so much to show, but not a lot of energy to talk about it. School starts tomorrow so I'm a bit frenzied. Here are the pics and short dets (click to enbiggen)...

mosaic6341324.jpg

First two pictures are the 5 X-mas Fetchings.

Next is the scarf I made for my cousin.

First picture in the second row is fetchings for my cousin who loved her mom's pair so much.

Middle of the second row is a hat to match my top-down gloves, which I finished, but are too big and need some fixing.

Lastly, something new!! That's just a gauge swatch. The color is the same as the first pic of the second row (same yarn even). More details later.

D'oh

arm.JPG

First day of school was spent not in class, but at the ER. I slipped and fell and did something awful to my elbow. It may or may not be broken. Fingers crossed that it is just a sprain, and I'll be better by Friday.

Any ideas of what you can do one-handed/armed with your non-dominant arm? (Other than very slow typing.) I've watched 4 episodes of Roseanne this morning and am bored!! I can't knit or play video games. It is hard to hold a book. I don't feel like typing lectures. I need entertainment ideas!

Friday Update

1. Left handed typing skills improving!!

2. We took off the splint Wednesday night so that I could get a shower. I'll spare you the picture of my elbow, but let's just say it was a lot of very unpretty colors. I was able to move it a little bit before putting the splint back on.

3. Yesterday I went back to work. I recruited students to help me carry stuff to and from my office and classrooms. The students were sympathetic. All I really wanted to tell them was that my hair usually looks much nicer! My last class of the day was more interested in asking questions about my arm than about the syllabus. I only took meds in the morning; the only pain I experienced during the day was in my upper back. I didn't realize how heavy my arm is in the sling.

4. Last night we took the splint off again. The colors were a little less horrifying. My elbow extending about a 1/4 down my forearm and 1/4 up my bicep is still very puffy and swollen. I was able to straighten my arm about 85%. Yay!

5. Today I had to go to the dentist for a couple tiny fillings. That was all good. The thing that annoyed me was everyone I walked by as I walked to the dentist (about a 12 minute walk) staring at me. I wanted to yell "yeah, I got a bum arm! Stop staring!!" I actually walked by three very dirty looking dudes, one of whom actually said "hey, look at that chick" to his buddies.

6. Not being able to knit is driving me crazy. It is making me less interested in Ravelry as well, which takes away a huge time killer. I just might have enough coordination to try making these.

Time to figure out what I can eat for lunch...

Saturday and Inspired

Arm update... last night after leaving the splint and wraps off for about an hour, I decide to stop using the splint and just wrap the elbow for support. Boy did that help me to sleep better! The new plan is to leave it unwrapped while just sitting around at home, and to wrap the elbow when going anywhere or sleeping. The only pain is when I try to extend or flex too much, and most of that is an achy muscle type of pain (akin to if you did 800 bicep curls with a 20lb weight). I really wanted to leave the splint off because it is really f-ing up my wrist more than anything. Aside from the muscle stiffness achy pain, my wrist is what really hurts to move and use. I think (in my nonmedical opinion) that the wraps and splint were forcing the swelling to move to areas that were more able to puff up, and with the help of gravity, that swelling moved to my wrist and hand, and that's causing the wrist pain. My hand/wrist is so puffy that I wore my fetchings (which are stretchy, and loose normally) and had ribbing marks when I took it off. So as I sit here enjoying the NYTimes magazine, I've got my arm elevated to hopefully depuff my hand/wrist.

And speaking of the NYTimes magazine, the cover story is on female desire and very interesting. In fact, one part sparked a whole set of interesting research questions related to my own research projects! I need to find some of the research articles discussed and read the info for myself, but if the journalist didn't take it way out of context, I may have a few new avenues to steer my research down. Yay!

Tentatively Knitting

I still don't know what officially happened to my elbow (sprain? dislocation? broken?) because I wasn't able to get to my appointment on Wednesday because of the weather. So I have to wait another week before I can see the orthopedist.

On the good news side of the elbow, the swelling is just about entirely gone, although the bruising is still extensive and colorful. I can't bend more than 90 degrees or extend it 100% straight, but I can use it more everyday. I can make peanut butter sandwiches again. I can type with two hands. I can actually write, though not for too long.

And, I can knit!! So well that I busted one of my Knitpicks needles. The cable snapped off the needle. I am confident enough in knitting again that I think I might pick up the sweater that I had just started the day before all this drama.
