Just a quick update (hopefully
I'll have more time for pictures and things tomorrow).
This is my right foot. According to the dermatologist, that mole
in the middle, which has been there as long as I can remember, has got
to go asap. Fortunately, I got a referral, so I don't have to pay
lots of money or do this.
I took this photo at the march on Saturday. I just pointed the
camera towards me while watching the crowd and tried to snap the picture
while looking natural. I am very impressed with the picture, especially
the looming building behind me.
Tonight is my second knitting class. Hopefully, most people will be able to move onto purling, which will mean by week 3, I'll be able to do some knitting too.
In other good news, I ordered some
zippers online after reading this
post about purchasing zippers for Mariah. They arrived today
and I think one is a winner! Now I just have to take it to the seamstress
to have it installed. Did I mention this before? There's a
place up the street called "Grandmas" and their window signs advertise
their tailoring and sewing, and to a lesser extent cleaning. So I'm
hoping they'll be able to do the zipper and do it well. Then Mariah
will really be ready for the fall/winter.

Let's review the weekend in reverse...
Sunday was all about relaxing and recovering from Saturday. I knitted quite a bit on something that I can't show you because I'm sending it off to my secret pal. I did manage over the weekend to finish another set of "pens" on the sheepy blanket.
So the crappy looking sheep are the ones I drew in with Paint so that
you can get a feel for what the blanket should look like (but with better
sheep). Just one more set of middle pens, then four across the top,
and then the evil border and I'm finished! Oh... and the sheep.
I also spent some time working on my new version of River...
I was happy with my progress last night (3 repeats finished) until
I took this picture this morning and realized that I screwed up the third
repeat. You can see at the top how it doesn't seem to flow correctly.
I can't figure out what I did wrong, so now I have to either rip or ignore.
Saturday involved a lot of knitting because we drove down to DC for the war protest. That's four hours in the the car both ways of knitting (well not so much on the way home because it got too dark in the car). I also knit was we marched through DC.
Crowd shot!
This guy was in his flight suit with a Bush mask.
Peace dove.
Look how close I got to the king of the world.
And I was all up in the face of the puppet master.
The billionaires for Bush.
And we did have a celebrity sighting while marching...
So if that was Saturday, that brings
us back in our review of the weekend to Friday. Friday morning I
had to visit a dermatologist and it turns out that while their office is
quite far from me, it is actually quite close to Princeton. And in
Princeton is the lovely yarn store Pins and Needles. So I took a
quick trip over to Pins and Needles for the purpose of picking up a gift
for my SP, and well... you know how it is. I picked up a copy of
Noro
Knits for myself (and enough Kureyon to make York...
shhh!!). I really like a lot of the patterns
in this book, but one of the things that I find so funny is that the male
model has very bad skin. In our world of massive airbrushing, I was
laughing outloud that the male model was au naturale (ok, that's probably
kind of mean), I guess there isn't enough money in the budget for airbrushing
in knitting books.

Here are the magnets that I made...
Here are my favorites...
Sarah Jessica Parker magnet 2! (I got a lot of photos from the
recent Vogue).
Marilyn Monroe magnet.
Knitting update (sans pictures... next time I promise!)
A fun postcard all the way from Germany! Thanks, Kim... it was
very sweet!
.
Kim in Florida sent me this lovely thank you gift. The notecards
are too cute; I almost don't want to use them! Pictured with the
notecards are little tags to attach to my handknits; they each say "Handknit
from Kim's Knitting World." (Kim, you've got to share how you made
these!!) In the other (unfortunately blurry) picture are some cute
magnet marbles. I've seen these online before and thought they were
cute and wanted to try making some myself, but it wasn't until I saw these
in person that I knew I had to try making my own. So yesterday I
went to Michael's and bought some supplies and started making my own.
They are super fun and quick to make (I'll show you pics after they are
dry!).
Thanks Kims!!!

Part 1: Self
Portrait Tuesday
This is my attempt to take a picture of my braids today (well, Monday).
I never realized the back of my neck was so smooth and nice. I really
like this self-portrait thing. The "planned" pictures that go slightly
wrong are often the best! Check out the website,
some of the more artistically inclined have some great pictures.
Part 2: Don't Cry Me a River
So Sunday I knit and knit and knit.
The baby blanket is over 1/3rd complete and ready for 3 more sheep.
Kevin's glove has the beginning of a pinky finger. And River... well
River...
River is no more. I was knitting along so carefully and then BAM! It was wrong. I tried tinking, but the YOs were not falling back into line and so, I ripped. The Kidsilk Haze wasn't as bad to rip as I anticipated (but it still wasn't fun). I restarted River... but I guess it is now more of a stream or a babbling brook...
I decided to go with just one patterned section and make a skinny scarf
instead of a shawl. I don't wear shawls much, but do wear lots of
scarves. I also dropped down to size 6 needles, instead of 10.5.
I like the fabric much better.
Stay tuned tomorrow for mail from
Kim (in Germany) and Kim (in Florida). (I think we should form an
international Kim coalition. Or maybe a Kim Pals instead of Secret
Pals!!).
September 18, 2005
I've been to Africa! Ok, not really. But I've been
completely addicted to this
site. I found this on someone else's blog (but I can't remember who! if it was your blog, please let me know so
I can give you proper credit!!). Kevin and I have been watching it nonstop since yesterday. So far we've
seen impala, warthogs, a jackal, and some herons. It is so cool having a window into another part of the world.
Knitting has been slow because of the humidity. Hopefully it will break and I'll accomplish something to show you tomorrow!

Here's my SP6 answers...
1. Are you a yarn snob (do you prefer higher quality and/or natural fibers)? Do you avoid Red Heart and Lion Brand? Or is it all the same to you?
I prefer natural fibers or blends. I don’t like Red Heart, but I do like many of the Lion Brand yarns. I tend to look for fun colors and softness, over what the yarn is composed of.
2. Do you spin? Crochet?
I don’t spin. I can crochet, but I prefer not to.
3. Do you have any allergies? (smoke, pets, fibers, perfume, etc.)
My skin is sensitive to fragrances and lotions. I don’t like smoke.
4. How long have you been knitting?
I’ve been knitting almost 3 years (although it feels like much longer!)
5. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Yes, but it is terribly outdated.
6. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
I like fruit scents and vanilla. I dislike flowery scents.
7. Do you have a sweet tooth?
Yes! Sugar is my friend!!
8. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do?
I’ve tried a few other crafts, but I don’t enjoy any as much as knitting.
9. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I’m a diehard 80s girl (pop, rock, metal).
10. What's your favorite color? Or--do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?
I’m very open to colors. I prefer bright colors.
11. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I live with my BF and we have no pets.
12. What are your life dreams? (really stretching it here, I know)
To be happy!
13. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with?
I don’t really have a favorite. I like to try out new things.
14. What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I don’t like anything scratchy.
15. What is/are your current knitting obsession/s?
Socks, always socks.

Too many things… a sweater, a baby blanket, gloves, and more.
18. What do you think about ponchos?
Eh.
19. Do you prefer straight or circular needles?
Depends on the project. I often use circulars if I have the right size.
20. Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Bamboo in general, but I’ve been using aluminum more in the humidity.
21. Are you a sock knitter?
You bet!
22. How did you learn to knit?
My grandmom taught me.
23. How old is your oldest UFO?
Several months.
24. What is your favorite animated character or a favorite animal/bird?
I like cats. My favorite animated shows are Family Guy, Futurama, and the Venture Brothers.

My birthday (though I guess it isn’t really a holiday, but it is right around Thanksgiving).
26. Is there anything that you collect?
Not really.
27. What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
Interweave and Family Circle Easy Knitting.
28. Any books out there you are dying to get your hands on?
The Knitting on the Edge Books
Any books by Rowan
Simple Knits with a Twist
There’s probably more, but I can’t think of them. I tend to prefer books with more patterns and less instruction (unless it is about a specific technique such as dyeing or felting). I’m drawn to books with lots of good pictures.
29. Any patterns you have been coveting, but haven't bought for one reason or another??
Knitpicks Kimono Styled Sweater
And this
30. What are your foot measurements, and what kind of socks do you like?
My foot is 8 ½ inches, toe to heel. About 8 inches around the ball of the foot. About 7 ½ inches around the ankle. I like all kinds of socks, but the more colorful the better!

When I came home from my office
this afternoon, I found three packages for moi! Package 1 was from
mom and contained a bunch of mail and some magazine clippings and a cute
tank top she picked up for me while she was on vacation. Package
2 was my video order from PBS; they got some great stuff that is perfect
for psychology classes. And package 3, the best package of the day...
My sockapal2za socks all the way from Germany!!!!! My sock pal,
Beate, is awesome
in her timing! The socks are absolutely gorgeous and fit perfectly!
I promise to take better pictures of them soon. There is no sun today
and it is so hot and humid that I could only wear the socks for 30 seconds.
But I'm looking forward to wearing these in the late fall and winter.
There's a beautiful lace pattern from the leg to the toe. Thank you,
thank you, Beate! You are so awesome!!
In other news, I finally got my Secret Pal 6 match. To the pal who has me, I promise to post the questionnaire tomorrow.
Comments...
Thanks Marian for the link to the David Bowie
song. That's awesome!
Lolly...
I'll be in DC on the 24th.
Cordelia...
I think it is a general performance anxiety, but I'm not completely sure.
For about the hour to two hours before class I feel very jittery and antsy
(it didn't help yesterday that I drank a Red Bull), but as soon as I get
into the classroom, I'm fine.
Bon
Jovi tickets will be obtained (as soon as they go on sale). They
just announced the tour late last night, so ticket information isn't available
yet... but I keep searching on ticketmaster and google constantly for more
information. I WILL pay anything to be there on my birthday.
(If anyone has any tips or knows a good way to get kick ass seats, I'd
be eternally indebted to you).
September 14, 2005
OH MY GOD! BON JOVI IS PLAYING
THE GARDEN ON MY BIRTHDAY!! I MUST GO!!!!
(this joy and anticipation is saving me from posting a vicious rant, which would probably get me in some trouble... let's just say some people need to learn organizational skills)
BON JOVI!! WOOOOOO!!!
September 13, 2005
So I saw this at Lolly's and Jodi's blogs, and seeing how I'm not afraid to post odd pictures of myself (see Sept 11th), I figured it could be fun giving the self-portrait a try (even more so because I'm making my social psych students do a similar project for class).
This picture was in part inspired by the challenge of the week, "body parts," and in part by the fact that there is an enormous tree branch in our backyard right now. I've always had a weird fear of trees and tree branches crushing things. When I was a kid, a big old tree was right outside my bedroom window and I would spend many stormy nights imagining that tree crashing through the ceiling and crushing me (it never happened). This "fear" wasn't helped when a tree fell in a storm last summer while Kevin and I were housesitting and landed on my car (if you're interested in the entire story go into the archives for June 2004 and scroll down to June 22). Anyway, the tree branch is huge and had a big secondary branch sticking straight up in the air and I guess because I watched Buffy and Charmed this morning I was thinking about being impaled with a stake or something, and viola this picture.
Knitting? Not so much.
I hate teaching in the evening. From about 4 until my class starts
at 7, I have all of this nervous energy, which makes it hard to knit or
concentrate on doing work. Then by the time I get home around 9,
I'm exhausted and knit a little, but mostly want to just stare blankly
at the TV. I'm looking forward to Thursday and knitting with the
girls!
September 12, 2005
One sheep, two sheep, three sheep...
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
Oh sorry, fell asleep there counting sheep.
I'm actually quite a bit beyond what is shown in the picture.
I attached a new skein and am nearly finished the next set of pens, which
means I'll soon need to duplicate stitch three more sheep. The sheep
have been going a bit more quickly, but they are still time consuming.
I spent a lot of time this weekend knitting. As you can see from the previous post there was a little work on River. I even pulled out the languishing Wristers and worked on them. But after a little while, I got annoyed with working too many patterns that required thought, so I pulled out the blanket squares and actually finished two! So I have a total of 9 squares and probably 20 more to go.
I finished writing up the pattern
for Top Secret Sweater (it will need a better name eventually). I
really want to start working on it and spend all my knitting time on it,
but I can't because it is a secret project. Fortunately, I think
I'll have some little pockets of time today to work on it!
September 11, 2005
Just because I'm crazy...
Want to see some pretty yarn?
.
It is called Diakeito and it is the most beautiful and softest yarn
I've ever seen. This is what Kim (not me) received for winning my
Katy contest. (Consolation prizes were mailed out today, so should
arrive soon!) I really need to go back to the Knitting Gallery and
buy some of this for myself. As you can see the three skeins are
different, but the store had the prettiest scarf (simple garter stitch)
that showed off so many great colors that I couldn't resist mixing and
matching.
The new Knitty
is posted. I've seen many other people mention it and gush over the
patterns they like, but I've got to admit, I wasn't very impressed.
There was very little that struck my fancy. And, am I wrong but isn't
Samus
the same thing as Kepler
but with a zipper? The one pattern I did consider making is Flora
because it is simple and uses a tiny amount of yarn and appears to be a
quick knit. Hmmm... brain storm... I have lots of stash yarn that
could be used to make A LOT of Floras... maybe I'll go into mass production
mode and everyone gets Flora for X-mas (well, not the guys). Time
to go stash diving (argh!! I really shouldn't cast on for a new project
[see list from Sept 1], but I don't have anything small [except Kevin's
gloves] and portable [the gloves aren't portable because I'm still on glove
1 and am making him try it on every 5 rows], so I just might have to cast
on.)
September 7, 2005
Even though I haven't been blogging,
I have been knitting. Things are hectic with the start of the school
year (I have my first class in about 2 hours and I'm starting to feel very
ill). Most of my class preparation the past couple of days has been
plotting how to get to the building (well, parking lot nearby) without
taking the 3 major roads in the area. Let's just say that the trial
run yesterday on one of the main roads took nearly an hour (under normal
[i.e. mild traffic] circumstances it should take 10 minutes, tops).
So I've got a crazy route planned to avoid (bad) traffic... because really,
there is traffic in NJ at 3am. Even though my class doesn't start
until 7:15, the parking lot is only gated until 6pm. Basically at
6:01, there will likely be ZERO parking spaces as all the commuter students
and other students on campus zoom into the spaces. (There's several
parking lots that students start lining up their cars outside of at least
an hour before the gates go up to get a spot). So I'm leaving very
early and planning to hang out and knit for an hour before class (hopefully
that will relax me). Hopefully, after a couple of weeks, I'll
find a good route and maybe find out that there is at least ONE parking
spot after 6, so I don't have leave so early. I hate when the students
come back... it is too crowded and trafficky!
Ok enough ranting. On to the knitting...
We have a sheep! I finally got far enough that I completed the
first set of "pens" and could duplicate stitch a sheep. Of course,
sheep 1 was placed incorrectly because I'm a dufus. This is sheep
1 attempt 2 and it is much better. Wanna close up?
The sheep took nearly an hour. I will eventually do 13 more sheep.
That's a lot of hours spent on sheep.
Because I needed to cast on another project and not finish other started
projects (ok, because I'm crazy), I cast on for River. I've completed
the set up rows and am just before the first repeated portion. So
far this as been fairly fast and easy. What you see is only about
2 hours of work, hopefully this will zoom by.
I am worried though that it will just be a lot of purple fuzziness
and not a scarf/shawl with a pretty pattern.
Happy B-day today to my Kevin!!
I had to give him his gifts at 8:30 this morning because we've both been
out and busy today and I won't be back from class until late, and I just
couldn't wait any longer! I really ought to start buying gifts at
the very last minute because I hate keeping them secret. Unfortunately
there were no hand knitted gifts among the presents (a Mets jersey and
a video game), but I am working on gloves for him, and I'd show you a picture,
but they are black and don't photograph well.
September 3, 2005
Yes, I have finally entered the
ranks of a "true" knitter. No longer will I awkwardly hold yarn around
my knees. No longer will I wind balls that jump and roll away as
I wind them. No longer will I curse and yell as the skein becomes
tangled. No longer will winding a ball of yarn take an hour.
The ball winder was from Herrschners and the swift from Joann's (with 50% of coupon!). They work beautifully. I wound all 15 skeins of Knitpicks Wool of the Andes Natural for my knitting class. Then I wound 4 other skeins I had within reach. I love winding skeins. I might wind every skein of yarn I own even if it doesn't need to be!
I'm much happier tonight as compared
to last night. Instead of the EVIL Rebecca pattern for Top Secret,
I picked one from Rowan that I think will work. The only problem
is that I was so mad about the Rebecca pattern, I cast on and started without
doing another gauge swatch... which is especially bad because I dropped
about 3 needle sizes from the suggested size in the Rowan pattern and just
decided to make a bigger size and hope for the best. So, Top Secret
project may or may not be back on track.
September 2, 2005
Current mood...
Top secret project is frogged. Rebecca magazine is dead. I love the pattern, but the instructions and chart DO NOT add up. I hate you Rebecca magazine!
I'm off to search for a new pattern
for top secret project...
September 1, 2005
Since we have a clean blog page
for the new month, let's look at what's on the needles and what is soon
to be cast on...
Old Projects
1. Flirty.
This has been languishing with
a finished back and a started front. There are no sleeves, but I
can't bring myself to work on it. All that 3x1 ribbing on size 2s.
2. Elspeth.
Also languishing. I really
would like to work on this, but I've convinced myself that I can't if Kevin
is around. I need to work on Elspeth when I'm all alone. Of
course, I could easily work on Elspeth's sleeves because there is no lace
on them, but I'm not, so she waits.
3. Wristers.
I really ought to just finish off
the second one, it is about halfway finished.
4. Blanket Squares.
This is just a long term project,
I pick up and knit rows here and there when I need some mindless knitting.
New Projects
5. Gloves for Kevin. I just
started these the other day after finishing Katy and the anklets.
There is no rush on the gloves since it won't be cold enough for them until
December, but it would be nice to actually have finished gloves by December.
6. Sheepy Baby Blanket.
This is for one of Kevin's best
friends from when he was growing up. It doesn't need to be finished
until January/February, but again, I want to get a jump on it so that I
won't be rushing at the last minute. The yarn is Encore (obtained
Tuesday at the Knitting Gallery) and the pattern is from Knit Baby Blankets.
7. Chocolate Cables.
This is a super, top secret project.
Shhhh! (Yarn from Knitpicks [duh!], arrived yesterday).
Soon to be Cast On
8. River Shawl.
I joined the knitalong, I had better
knit along!
9. Kepler.
Yarn is in hand (arrived yesterday,
this picture is bad, it is more pink than red), but first I need to make
adjustments to the pattern to make it a raglan, and maybe figure out a
different neckline.
10. Socks. I have at least 3 pairs for myself waiting to be started and one planned for my mom.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MEME Time!
10 years ago: I was preparing to start my junior year of high school. It would be my first full season on the varsity tennis team playing doubles with my friend Jenny (wow, there’s a lot of stories from that time… playing in a tournament and sliding across the court on my knees diving after a ball… playing in the semi-finals of another tournament… colliding with Jenny on a ball between us, ending her season with a sprained ankle). It would also be my first (and last) year playing piccolo in the marching and concert band.
5 years ago: I had just moved into my new townhouse dorm room for my senior year of college. Having just taken my GREs and cramming as many psychology classes as possible into my schedule, I would spend the fall semester filling out applications for graduate school.
1 year ago: I was about to start my fourth year of graduate school. I was desperately trying to come up with a topic for my quals (as you well know that took almost a year!). I was about to start what has been my favorite class in grad school—personality psychology. I was also about to start my least favorite TA assignment.
Yesterday: (This is actually from Sunday since I originally wrote this on Monday) Kevin and I woke up early and went to Barnes and Noble to meet up with some other grad students. Afterwards we went to Wegman’s for groceries (I hate shopping on Sundays, but we had no food… ok, no good food). We ate sushi for lunch and watched the Mets game. I knit as we watched King of the Hill, Family Guy, and American Dad. I dyed my hair before returning to TV and knitting for Adult Swim’s Sunday Lineup.
5 snacks: pretzels, Utz cheese balls, yogurt, Mr. Goodbar, carrots
5 songs I know all of the words to: (this is the hardest one! I know the words to soooo many songs, so let’s list artists) Bon Jovi, Ellis Paul, Tom Petty, The Monkees, John Mayer
5 things I would do with $100 million: open a yarn store, travel allover Europe, buy a house with a washing machine and a dryer and a dish washer, buy season tickets to the Mets, save it for a rainy day
5 places to run away to: my bed, Kevin’s arms (awwww), my car (sometimes I just love being alone in my car, blasting music, and singing along badly)… probably some nice private tropical island and a beautiful secluded countryside (I really need to travel more!)
5 things I would never wear: pants with a pattern, midriff shirts, vests, ties, spandex pants
5 favorite tv shows: (we’ll go with current shows to limit the list to 5) Venture Brothers, Arrested Development, Family Guy, Starved, Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia
5 biggest joys: Kevin, knitting, teaching, Kevin, knitting
5 favorite toys: Laptop, all my knitting stuff, uhm… I think I need more toys!
Who to tag? Wow, this was
a hard one. If you want it, its yours!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks again for the compliments
on Katy and the anklets. I'm sure you are all correct... my neighbor
has probably seen weirder things (he is apparently a theater person) than
someone taking pictures of her feet.
